Rescue teams are searching the Atlantic Ocean after the sudden disappearance of the Titanic tourist submarine.

A rescue operation took place deep in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean on Monday in search of a submersible carrying people to see the wreckage of the Titanic.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia said the vessel was reported overdue at about 9:13 p.m. Sunday, about 700 kilometers south of St. John's, Newfoundland.

Lt. Cmdr. Len Hickey said a Canadian Coast Guard vessel and a military aircraft were assisting the search effort, which was being led by the US Coast Guard in Boston.

OceanGate Expeditions confirmed the search for its five-person diver and said its focus was on those on board and their families.

David Concannon, an adviser to the company, said Oceangate lost contact with the submarine on Sunday morning. He had a 96-hour oxygen supply, he said in an email to The Associated Press on Monday afternoon.

The wreck of the Titanic lies 3,800 meters below the bottom of the Atlantic, 400 nautical miles off the coast of Canada.
