Former Formula 1 driver and renowned Paralympic champion passes away

Legendary Formula 1 driver and Paralympic champion Alessandro Zanardi has died at the age of 59.

The news was announced in an official statement from the family, which said that Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his loved ones. While thanking everyone who expressed their support, the family has asked for the utmost respect for their privacy at this time of mourning, adding that information regarding the funeral will be released at a later date.

Zannard's passion blossomed at the age of 14, thanks to a gift from his father. For his exceptional technical skills and clean driving style, Alex quickly earned the nickname 'Parigino'.

After his debut in Formula 3 in 1988, he made the step up to Formula 3000 in 1991. At the wheel of the Reynard run by the "Il Barone Rampante" team, the Italian stunned the world of motorsport by winning on his debut at Vallelunga and fighting for the title until the last race against Christian Fittipaldi, despite some reliability problems. /CNA
