EU suspends funds for Serbia

The European Union has decided to suspend payments of financial support to Serbia under the European Development Plan, due to problems identified in the judicial system.

The news was announced by Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, who stressed that the funds will remain frozen until the authorities in Belgrade address shortcomings in the functioning and independence of the judiciary.

"At this point, we have suspended all payments to Serbia under the development plan, because we are again seeing obstacles in the judicial system. Until this is corrected, the country will not be able to benefit from financial support from the EU," she stated.

The decision comes at a sensitive moment for relations between Brussels and Belgrade, as discussions are taking place within European institutions on Serbia's progress on the path towards EU integration and respect for democratic standards.

According to previous reports, the EU is also considering the possibility of blocking around 1.5 billion euros in aid to Serbia. Among the reasons cited are not only rule of law issues, but also Belgrade's ongoing relations with Russia.

This development could significantly affect Serbia's economy and reforms, increasing pressure on the government to meet the criteria required by the European Union./ CNA
