Haxhiu announces date for elections in Kosovo

Kosovo's acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, has announced June 7 as the date for holding new early parliamentary elections - the third in about a year and a half.

Haxhiu's decision on Thursday comes shortly after holding a meeting with leaders and representatives of political parties in the country to set the election date.

"After listening to the proposals of political parties and after assessing the constitutional deadlines, the organizational needs of the CEC, and the importance of the widest possible participation of citizens in this process, I have decided that the early elections for the Assembly of Kosovo will be held on June 7," said Haxhiu.

She said that 15 of the 17 invited parties attended the meeting to choose between two possible dates, May 31 and June 7.

Representatives of some of the largest parties also said after the meeting that they had agreed that new elections would be held on June 7.

Bedri Hamza, leader of the main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), said after the meeting that "most of the political parties represented here and present were in favor of the 7th."/REL
