New agreement/ Israel will withdraw from two areas in southern Lebanon

Israel has agreed to withdraw from two areas in southern Lebanon, handing them over to the Lebanese army, under a new agreement signed in Washington on June 26, 2026. The development comes after four days of talks brokered by the United States, aimed at paving the way for a broader peace between the two countries that have historically had no diplomatic relations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces would withdraw from areas the military no longer deems necessary, including a location north of the Litani River and another south of it. The withdrawal is part of a pilot program aimed at restoring Lebanese sovereignty over these territories. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it the beginning of a difficult but vital process for regional stability.

On the other hand, the agreement has caused strong reactions within Lebanon. While Lebanese President Joseph Aoun hailed it as a step towards the complete liberation of the land from foreign influence, the militant group Hezbollah strongly opposed the decision. Hezbollah representatives described the negotiation with Israel as a criminal act and called on Lebanese authorities to cancel all decisions taken in this context.

Netanyahu hailed the deal as a strategic victory, stressing that Israel would retain control over the rest of the occupied territory as long as Hezbollah remains armed. He also described the move as a blow to Iran's influence in the region, saying Israel, Lebanon and the US were sending a message to Tehran that security matters in the area were no longer under their dictates.
