Government changes and priorities in North Macedonia

Government changes and priorities in North Macedonia

There have been many changes in the history of Macedonian governments, but there is no analysis of whether and to what extent they have brought better results. The assessment is usually given by citizens in elections.

Not results, but newly defined priorities will reshape the composition of the government in North Macedonia, which is facing its first major change after two years in office.

"Every change is not made solely because of the results, regardless of whether they were good or not good enough, or maybe there were no results at all," says Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski.

"Sometimes the government's reconstruction is done because priorities change. Maybe these priorities had one form two years ago, after two years they have a different form. And it is logical that the partners of the government coalition, after these two years, will improve their priorities and, where they can, will contribute more. I think this change will be like that," the Prime Minister explained in an interview for MRT, expecting the reconstructed government to complete its mandate with great success.

Everything will be known after the EC session.

This will not be the first government reshuffle. There has already been one, but it was a mini-reshuffle that followed the local elections. The departure of Izet Mexhiti as mayor of Cair left two vacant positions - First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning. Before the end of 2025, Muhamed Hoxha took over the Ministry of Environment, while he was elected First Deputy Prime Minister, but also Minister of European Affairs, taking over this post from Orhan Murtezani.

In anticipation of the major reshuffle, the names of potential candidates for new ministers and the possibility of a reorganization of some departments among the partners have been mentioned in public for a long time. However, Mickoski said that the answers will be known after the session of the VMRO-DPMNE Executive Committee, which will be held on Tuesday next week.

Deep minus...

The government's performance in the last two years is deeply contradictory. SDSM leader Venko Filipçe criticizes every day that the government promised a better life, but did not deliver anything, and that citizens are living worse.

"When I hear them say that 90% was not realized, I don't know what to say. But they tell their stories, we tell our truth," says Mickoski.

Comparing the situation at the time the Government began its mandate with the situation today, he estimates that it is much better than two years ago.

"Two years ago we knew that the situation was difficult, that it was bad. But believe me, this is 'poetry' compared to what we really found two years ago. We started not from scratch, but from a deep minus. And that is why after two years I can say that we have finally consolidated and are ready to move forward faster. I expect that with these changes in the cabinet and with the redefined priorities, which are within the framework of the government program, we will fulfill the commitments we made to the citizens," says Mickoski.

He says he is proud of all members of the Government. "We managed to consolidate the system that was destroyed, after a cataclysm that systematically destroyed the country," the Prime Minister said of the previous SDSM governments.

Code of conduct

However, in recent days, the Prime Minister has been critical of the behavior of some unidentified representatives of the executive. At the party's 36th anniversary celebration, he stressed that he is monitoring violations of the code of conduct.

"I have received complaints that some ministers and directors are inaccessible to the people, and there are those for whom private trips have become more preferable than visits to villages and cities (...) We are here to serve the people," he said.

Mickovski claims that he will not tolerate passion for the privileges offered by the government and that he will not accept excuses from any appointed official that they were tired. He told the tired that it would be more honest for them to leave.

In the history of Macedonian governments, there have been many changes, but there is no analysis of whether and to what extent the changes have yielded results. Such an "assessment" was usually left to the citizens, in regular or early elections.

Mickoski's full government mandate ends in April 2028. "At the beginning of 2028, we will again have a technical government (...) and that means from this moment on - there is a year and a half until regular elections," Mickoski said./ DW
