Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha amid rising food prices

Millions of Muslims around the globe celebrated Eid al-Adha, one of the biggest holidays in the Islamic calendar that coincides with the final rites of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

In some countries, including Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asian states, Eid al-Adha was celebrated on July 9. But in other parts of the globe, including Pakistan and Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country, Eid was celebrated on July 10.

Many Muslims celebrate the four-day holiday by slaughtering cattle [qurbani] and distributing the meat to relatives, neighbors and the poor.

But while Russia's war in Ukraine has sent food prices soaring around the world, many people said they could not afford to slaughter cattle, the religious ritual for Eid al-Adha.

In Afghanistan, there is normally a rush to buy animals before the Eid al-Adha holiday. But this year, rising global food prices and the economic devastation following the Taliban's takeover have made the ritual of slaughtering the sacrifice impossible for many Afghans.

In eastern Ukraine, dozens of Ukrainian Muslims gathered on July 9 to celebrate Eid al-Adha at the mosque in Kostiantynivka, the last remaining operational mosque in the Ukrainian-controlled territory of Donbas.

Only a few local residents were present, as the war has forced many to flee to the western regions of the country./rel
