Moldova extends the state of emergency for 60 days

Moldova's parliament has extended the state of emergency for another 60 days, after the government said it still needed more power to deal with the fallout from Russia's war in Ukraine.

Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita has told lawmakers that there are ongoing risks to energy and border security.

She also mentioned the need to manage the wave of refugees from Ukraine.

"The risk for Moldova, due to the war in Ukraine, is high. The government needs additional power", she said.

The state of emergency will apply from August 8 to October 8.

About 500,000 Ukrainians have fled their country since Russia began its invasion in February.

About 100,000 of them continue to be in Moldova.

The Parliament of Moldova first declared a state of emergency two days after the start of the war in Ukraine.

This measure was then extended through votes in April and June.

Moldova is neither a member of the European Union nor NATO.

Together with Ukraine, they received the status of a candidate for membership in the European bloc in June of this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

He calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions./REL
