Khan's supporters stage nationwide protests
Protests in Pakistan

Nationwide protests have been held in Pakistan by supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan, a day after he was the target of an assassination attempt. Protesters blocked key roads in major cities and clashed with security forces.

Khan's Tehrik-e Insaf (PTI) party called for the protests to continue until its demands for political change in Pakistan are met, aide Asad Umar said.

Khan, 70, was shot in the leg on November 3 as he greeted the crowd during a protest in Islamabad held to pressure the government to call early elections.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shabar Sharif condemned the attack and demanded an immediate investigation into the incident.

The alleged attacker was arrested after the attack, and authorities said he admitted to wanting to kill Khan. According to the authorities, the attacker said that he was angry with the statements of the former prime minister when he compared the political difficulties with those of the prophet Muhammad.

Khan was ousted from power in April through a motion of no confidence initiated by some of his coalition partners./ REL
