Paul Pelosi released from hospital after hammer attack

Businessman Paul Pelosi, husband of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has been released from a San Francisco hospital where he underwent surgery for injuries sustained after he was hit with a hammer six days ago by a person who had forced entry into the house.

The 82-year-old real estate and venture capital entrepreneur "remains under the care of doctors as he continues to progress through a long process of healing and recovery" at home, Ms. Pelosi said in a statement released by her office.

DePape, who is being held without parole, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, elder abuse, false imprisonment and threatening a public official. He could face a sentence of 13 years and up to life in prison if convicted.

Federal prosecutors have also charged Mr. DePape with assault and attempted kidnapping, charges punishable by up to 50 years in prison.
