Supporter of Albanian causes/ US Congressman Eliot Engel passes away

US Congressman Eliot Engel has passed away at the age of 79.

Engel, who represented New York in the House of Representatives from 1989 to 2021, was a powerful voice in the US for the cause of Albanians and a supporter of Kosovo's independence.

During his political career, Eliot Engel became known for his commitment to American foreign policy. Meanwhile, the reasons for his passing are still unknown.

Kosovo has named a road and a highway in Engel's honor and has issued a postage stamp with his photograph. On December 8, 2020, at a hearing in the House of Representatives, Engel spoke about the Western Balkans, and specifically about Kosovo.

“I did not know the passion I would develop for a small corner of Europe called the Balkans. I have traveled to every country in the Western Balkans several times, met with so many leaders from so many parties, and loved the rich diversity of cultures, ethnicities, and religions. But no country has touched my heart more than Kosovo,” he said at the time, according to REL.

Politics in Kosovo has also reacted to his passing. The Speaker of the Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, said that the country lost a proven friend and unwavering supporter of Kosovo’s freedom and statehood.

PDK leader Bedri Hamza said that Engel was the voice of justice for Kosovo in the United States of America.

AAK leader Ramush Haradinaj, in his reaction, said that “Albanians will always be grateful for his historic and irreplaceable contribution to Kosovo’s freedom and independence.”

The Mayor of Pristina, Përparim Rama, wrote in a post on social media that Kosovo will always remember his friendship and dedication. /CNA
