Measures to curb price increases/ Australia halves fuel tax for three months

The Australian government will halve fuel taxes for three months to help motorists hit by rising petrol prices. The news was announced by the country's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The tax, currently 52 cents per litre, will be halved temporarily in a move estimated to cost the government about A$1.75 billion.

"We are reducing fuel costs today because we understand that Australians are under great pressure ," Albanese said, stressing the need for immediate action.

The Australian government is also trying to calm the market, stressing that fuel imports are continuing normally and that the problems in some areas are mainly due to panic buying and distribution failures.

In this situation, the states of Victoria and Tasmania have announced free public transport, while authorities are urging citizens to limit the use of their vehicles in order to conserve supplies.

"The less fuel we consume in urban centers, the more we can drive to regions that are facing greater pressure," Albanese said.

In New South Wales, state Premier Chris Means warned that dozens of petrol stations had run out of fuel, stressing the need to support rural areas.

"If the situation worsens, we will take additional measures ," he said.

At the same time, the federal government introduced a bill that would allow guaranteed purchases of large fuel shipments, increasing domestic sufficiency.

According to the latest figures, Australia's reserves are equivalent to about 39 days of gasoline and 30 days of diesel, levels considered marginal in times of strong volatility. /CNA
