China: Sending weapons to Ukraine will not bring peace

China's deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Dai Bing, told the General Assembly that a year after the war in Ukraine, "brutal facts provide sufficient proof that sending arms will not bring peace."

"Throwing gasoline on the fire will only exacerbate tensions. "Prolonging and widening the conflict will only make ordinary people pay an even higher price," he said.

"We are ready to continue playing a constructive role in the crisis in Ukraine and bring peace as soon as possible," he added.

Western powers have provided Ukraine with arms worth billions of dollars since Russia launched its invasion of the country on February 24, 2022.

The United States and NATO have accused China of considering supplying arms to Russia and have warned Beijing against such a move.

China has rejected these accusations and said that the US is not in a position to make demands on Beijing.

Dai made the comments at the UN a day after China's top diplomat visited Moscow and pledged to deepen partnership with Russia. China and Russia have announced a "borderless" partnership before Russia invaded Ukraine.

The UN General Assembly later on February 23 is expected to vote on a resolution calling for "durable peace" and demanding that Russia withdraw its troops from Ukraine./REL
