Israel and Palestinians pledge to reduce violence

The Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority have issued a joint statement on taking steps to reduce violence.

This statement was issued on Sunday, after rare talks between the two sides, which took place in Jordan, in which officials from the United States and Egypt also participated.

In the meeting, agreement was reached to take steps towards increasing trust and to work towards "long-term peace".

As the talks began, a Palestinian gunman shot dead two Israelis in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli army later said it would add two additional battalions for increased security.
