The United States envoy will visit Beirut to continue talks on reducing tensions

United States diplomatic envoy Amos Hochstein will visit Beirut on Monday to continue diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border and achieving a stable situation, White House and U.S. officials said Sunday. Lebanon.

The Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah and Israel have been in conflict for months, parallel to the war in Gaza.

The conflict is the worst since the 2006 war and has fueled fears of a wider escalation.

The deputy speaker of the Lebanese parliament Elias Bou Saab, one of the officials who will meet with Mr. Hochstein, told the Reuters news agency that he believed the timing of the visit showed progress in efforts for a cease-fire in Gaza.

The White House did not provide further details about the visit.

Washington has stated that reaching an agreement is not far off and that it intends for it to happen before the start of the month of Ramadan, next week.

Hezbollah has publicly stated that it will cease attacks on Israel from Lebanon when Israel ceases its offensive in Gaza, but that it is willing to continue fighting if Israel continues its attacks.

United States envoy Amos Hochstein, who visited Beirut in January, earlier brokered a rare diplomatic agreement between Lebanon and Israel to demarcate maritime borders.

The Hezbollah group, designated a terrorist organization by the United States, has not been directly involved as a party to Mr. Hochstein's diplomatic efforts. His proposals have been forwarded by Lebanese mediators.
