Georgia/ Protesters attempt to enter presidential palace

Georgian police used pepper spray and water cannons on Saturday against protesters who attempted to enter the presidential palace in Tbilisi.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets following calls from opposition parties for large protests against the ruling Georgian Dream party on the day of local elections.

Their goal is to bring back the daily protests that began last year, following suspected violations in the parliamentary elections and the government's decision to halt talks on membership in the European Union.

Protests have not been held in recent months.

Crowds began gathering shortly after the voting process began on October 4, and some organizers have said their goal is the "peaceful overthrow of the government."

However, around 7:00 PM they began moving towards the presidential palace.

As protesters attempted to enter the palace, Georgia's Interior Ministry said the march had exceeded "the norms established by law." Police responded by using water cannons and pepper spray.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Georgia Service reports that police officers and protesters have physically clashed, and that protesters have thrown unidentified objects.

Former Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, who previously led peaceful protests, has criticized the protesters' actions.

"As a legitimate president, I oppose this and continue to be close to my people peacefully until we reach new elections," Zurabishvili said.

Before the protests, authorities have vowed a harsh response to those aiming for "revolution."/REL
