Osmani: Vu?i?'s calls for war, a dangerous echo of the darkest chapters

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said on Saturday that Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i?'s "reckless calls" for war are dangerous echoes of the darkest chapters of recent history.

She referred to a statement by the Serbian president made on Friday, when he said that "everyone is preparing for war" and that Kosovo is "trying to use this time before the war" to convince most European states and NATO countries to side with Pristina.

He made these comments in response to a journalist's question about President Osmani's call for Europe to prevent Serbia's aggressive and destabilizing tactics towards its neighbors.

"Despite years of tireless American and European engagement to pave the way for lasting peace, Vu?i? is showing the world that he has not chosen the path of reconciliation. Instead of turning the page, Vu?i? and his regime are once again flirting with the same destructive fantasies that have destroyed so many innocent lives," Osmani said in a post on X - formerly Twitter.

Speaking at the European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Copenhagen, Vu?i? said that "the world will become increasingly difficult" and that he "thinks we are heading towards a major conflict."

"We already know that there will be a war, and there will be, I'm telling you, because I see what is happening and how everyone is preparing. No one is preparing for the talks, they are just looking at who will be on whose side. They are digging their trenches and waiting for the beginning," Vu?i? declared.

He has provided no evidence to support his claims that there will be war and has vowed that Serbia will “do its utmost” not to participate in that war.

But Osmani said that the Serbian president's approach is not unknown.

"In the 1990s, Slobodan Milosevic [former Yugoslav leader] chose genocidal war as his final instrument of power. He committed inhuman violence in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and then Kosovo – all documented for the world to see. Through his propaganda machine, with Vu?i? as its chief propagandist, he has fomented hatred that has led to systematic murder, mass graves, destruction and the deeper isolation of Serbia," Osmani said, among other things.

According to her, Vu?i? believes he can revive the same formula, but that history has been clear that just as Miloševi? failed, the same awaits Vu?i?.

"Kosovo, on the other hand, has chosen peace. Peace, which we will defend at all costs," Osmani concluded.

At the start of the European Political Community summit in Denmark on Thursday, Kosovo President Osmani told reporters that Russia poses a threat to Europe, while Serbia poses a threat to the Western Balkans region, accusing Belgrade of copying Moscow's actions.

Osmani has called on the European Union to "not reward" Serbia.

According to her, if there is no Western influence in the Balkans, "the malignant forces of the 'Triangle of Evil' – Russia, China and Iran – always come there not out of charity, but with malicious strategic interests."

"Therefore, it is important that enlargement be pushed forward and the Western Balkans, those countries in the region that meet the criteria and work with EU values, should be considered to move forward."

Even during her stay in the United States a week ago, Osmani said that Belgrade poses a constant threat to Pristina.

Asked in an interview with Fox News whether Kosovo and Serbia were on the brink of conflict in June, Osmani said that Kosovo's northern neighbor "likes to cause problems from time to time."

Among other things, Osmani said that the administration of US President Donald Trump has done a good job in preventing the escalation of the situation between Kosovo and Serbia.

In recent months, President Trump has stated several times that he has prevented an escalation between Kosovo and Serbia.

Kosovo and Serbia have been negotiating for the normalization of relations in Brussels – with the mediation of the European Union – since 2011. The parties have signed a number of agreements, but not all of them have been implemented.

Kosovo insists that the process must end with mutual recognition. In recent months, high-level dialogue has been blocked, partly because Kosovo has no new institutions after the parliamentary elections on February 9. /REL
