The Afghan Taliban-led Foreign Ministry said 80 Afghan nationals, including children, died when the ship sank off southern Italy on February 26.

Search and rescue teams have so far confirmed that 64 people have died after a ship capsized near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort in Italy. Eighty people have been rescued and many more are believed to be missing.

"With deep sadness, we have learned... that 80 Afghan refugees, including women and children, who were traveling from Turkey to Italy in a wooden ship, drowned in the southern Italian sea," the Ministry said in a statement. Afghan Foreign.

"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan prays for the martyrs and for patience for the families of the victims. We call on all citizens to avoid traveling to foreign countries through irregular migration," the statement added.

The ship that sank was headed for Italy from Izmir in western Turkey.

The United Nations refugee agency has said that almost half of the refugees who arrived by sea from Turkey to Italy last year were Afghans.
