France and Britain agree to curb illegal immigrants

France and Great Britain signed a new agreement aimed at curbing the crossing of illegal immigrants through the English Channel.

According to the agreement, signed by the interior ministers of the two countries, Great Britain will pay France 75 million dollars in the period 2022-2023. In return, France commits to increase by 40% the number of officers patrolling French beaches.

The agreement will also strengthen security at the ports by investing in surveillance technology, with drones and helicopters to help detect and prevent illegal crossings.

Britain is dealing with a lower number of asylum seekers than other European countries such as Italy, France and Germany, but thousands of migrants, including Albanians, head to the French summer each year in the hope of crossing the English Channel to arrive in Britain.

More than 40,000 people have used boats and other small watercraft to cross the English Channel this year. Dozens of people have lost their lives while undertaking this journey in search of a better life.

Critics have blamed the British government for being slow in processing asylum requests, leaving thousands of people in poor conditions in migrant centers./ VOA
