Israeli forces kill two Palestinians during a raid in the West Bank

Israeli forces killed two Palestinians, including a fighter for the Islamist group Hamas, during a raid on a refugee camp in the West Bank on Sunday, emergency workers and Hamas said. Meanwhile in Gaza, Israeli attacks hit security checkpoints for the second day.

Israeli forces raided the Nur Shams camp near the West Bank town of Tulkarm in the early hours of Sunday morning, sparking an hours-long battle with Palestinian fighters, witnesses said.

The Israeli military said it had launched a counter-terrorism operation at the camp, dismantling an operational command center equipped with computers and surveillance cameras. Israeli forces discovered dozens of explosive devices and bomb-making components, Israeli officials said.

"During the action, the suspects opened fire and threw explosive devices at the forces, who responded with direct fire," the Israeli military said in a statement, adding that one Israeli soldier was wounded.

Hamas, which has expanded beyond its base in Gaza and the West Bank, said one of those killed, 21-year-old Osaid Abu Ali, was a member of its armed wing.

The family of the other slain, 32-year-old Abdel-Rahman Abu Daghash, said he had climbed to the roof of his house to observe what was happening when he was shot by a sniper./ VOA
