FBI Raises Alarm: Hamas Attack Will Inspire Biggest Terror Threat Since ISIS

Hamas' attack on Israel will inspire the greatest terrorist threat to the United States since the rise of ISIS nearly a decade ago, FBI Director Christopher Wray told a congressional hearing on Tuesday, Reuters reports .

Wray said that since the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza began earlier this month, numerous foreign terrorist organizations have called for attacks against Americans and the West, increasing the threat posed by violent American extremists.

"The actions of Hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration, the likes of which we have not seen since ISIS launched its so-called caliphate several years ago," Wray said.

The remarks came during a hearing before the US Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee focused on threats to the United States. The US government has seen an increase in threats against Jews, Muslims and Arab-Americans since fighting broke out in Gaza, officials said.

The number of attacks on US military bases overseas by Iranian-backed militia groups has increased this month, Wray said. Cyber ??attacks against the United States by Iran and non-state actors are likely to worsen if the conflict widens, he said.

Iran's mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

During the hearing, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that the hatred directed at Jewish students in the United States after the beginning of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza had added to the rise of anti-Semitism./ CNA
