Britain: Explosions at base in Crimea degrade Russian air fleet

Explosions this week at a Russian air base in Crimea have degraded Russia's air fleet, Britain said.

Explosions at the Saki airbase have destroyed at least eight Russian warplanes and caused widespread destruction.

While the destroyed aircraft are only a small part of Russia's fleet in the Black Sea, Britain said the fleet's capabilities would be affected, as Saki is considered a key operational base.

In its daily update on the war in Ukraine, the British Ministry of Defense said that the Saki base is likely still operational, but the surrounding areas have suffered serious damage.

Satellite images released this week have shown extensive destruction at the Saki Air Base in Russian-occupied Crimea.

Russia has said that the explosions killed one person and injured dozens more. Moscow has said that the cause of the explosions is non-compliance with fire regulations.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has denied that it is behind the explosions. However, several unidentified Ukrainian officials have told US media that the Ukrainian military is behind the explosions.

Russia has used the Saki airbase, located in the west of Crimea, to carry out attacks on Ukrainian territory since it launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24./REL
