Taiwan conducts military drills amid heightened tensions with China

Taiwan conducted military drills on August 11, a day after neighboring China ended large-scale drills in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan's military drills, which lasted almost an hour, involved hundreds of troops and artillery.

These exercises were held in the southern part of the island. Taiwan had held similar exercises in the same area on August 9.

Taiwan's military said both drills were planned earlier and were not held in response to Beijing's actions.

Tensions in the area have increased since last week the speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelsoi, together with a delegation of the US Congress, visited Taiwan.

Pelosi is the most senior US official to visit the island of Taiwan in decades.

China claims Taiwan as its province and refuses to rule out the possibility of using force to regain control of the island.

China and Taiwan were separated during the civil war in 1940.

Relations between Beijing and Taipei have worsened separately since 2016, when Tsai Ing-wen became president of Taiwan on the platform of not recognizing Beijing's claims on the self-governing island./REL
