Nearly two-thirds of Democrats say President Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race and allow his party to nominate another candidate, according to a new poll, strikingly at odds with his post-debate assertion that "most Democrats ” are with him even though some “weighty names” are turning against him.

A new poll conducted by the Associated Press news agency with the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research two weeks after President Biden's poor showing in the debate also concluded that only about 3 in 10 Democrats are very convinced or very unconvinced. convinced that Mr. Biden has the mental capacity to serve effectively as president, a drop of 40 percent compared to the survey conducted by these organizations in February.

The results highlight the challenges facing the 81-year-old president as he tries to quell rumors within his own party to leave the race and try to convince Democrats that he is the best candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump. The survey was conducted largely before Saturday's assassination attempt on Mr. Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. It is unclear whether the assassination affected respondents' views of Mr. Biden, but a small number of poll questions asked after the event did not convey any early signs that his odds have improved.

While Vice President Kamala Harris is thrust into the spotlight as part of the debate over whether Mr. Biden should drop out of the race, poll results show a similar rating for her — but the percentage of Americans who have an unfavorable opinion of her is slightly lower. lower.

The poll shows African-American Democrats are Mr. Biden's strongest supporters, with nearly half of respondents saying he should continue in the race, compared with 3 in 10 white or Hispanic Democrats. Overall, seven in 10 Americans think Mr. Biden should withdraw from the race. The number of Democrats who think he should step down is catching up with Republicans and independent voters who say Mr. Biden should make way for a new Democratic nominee.

"I'm honestly concerned about his ability to serve in this position," said 27-year-old Denver Democrat Andrew Holcomb. "He is very old."

Janie Stapleton, a 50-year-old Democrat from Walls, Mississippi, takes a different stance, saying Mr. Biden is the "best candidate" for president.

Voters aren't just unhappy with Mr. Biden.

About 6 in 10 Americans want Mr. Trump to step down — but only a few Republicans share that view.

As for Mr. Biden, it is generally young Democrats who want him to retire and who say they are unhappy with him. Three-quarters of Democrats under the age of 45 want Mr. Biden to step down, compared with 6 in 10 of those who are older.

"It's sad that we have these two individuals as alternatives," said Alexi Mitchell, 35, who lives in Virginia. She identifies as an independent, Democratic-leaning voter who, while she thinks Mr. Biden is still capable of serving in the post, is concerned that the waning of support for him in recent weeks makes him a weak candidate, despite what happens next "If he's not in control of his party, it's a fatal flaw," she says. "It has put us in an unenviable position where Trump can win."

Democrats are more likely to say they are unhappy with Mr. Biden as their nominee now than before his appearance in the debate. About half are dissatisfied, an increase of about 4 in 10 from the June survey.

Meanwhile, a majority of Republicans – about 6 in 10 – were satisfied or very satisfied with Mr. Trump as their candidate. Only a small number of interviews were conducted after the assassination attempt to give any clear indication of whether Republicans or Americans in general have mobilized even more around Mr. Trump since that day.

David Parrott, a Democrat from Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, says he was willing not to prejudice Mr. Biden because of age, but he expressed concern about a second term.

"I don't know if I can make it another four years," says the 58-year-old Parrott.

Recent developments have made Americans think Mr Trump is more likely to win the 2024 election than Mr Biden - by a margin of 42 to 18 per cent. About a quarter think both are equally likely to win.

Even Democrats are somewhat pessimistic about their party's chances in November.

Only a third of Democrats believe that Mr. Biden is more likely than Mr. Trump to win the election. About 3 in 10 think the two candidates are equally likely to win, and 16 percent say Republicans are more likely to win. Compared to them, the vast majority of Republicans are convinced that Mr. Trump is in the best position to win.

Mr. Trump leads Mr. Biden even when Americans consider who is better able to manage crises, 38 percent to 28 percent. Voters are split on the best vision for the country, with 35 percent of respondents favoring Mr. Biden and 34 percent for Mr. Trump.

Despite the frustration Mr. Biden is facing, the President insists it's not too late to turn things around, saying past presidents have reversed course.

The poll also offered reason for optimism about Mr. Biden: 40 percent of Americans say he is more honest than Mr. Trump, while 2 in 10 respondents think the opposite.

A majority of Democrats — about 6 in 10 — say Vice President Harris would make a good president, while 22 percent think the opposite and 2 in 10 respondents don't think they know enough to make a judgment. The survey showed that 43 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of him, while 48 percent have an unfavorable opinion. About 6 in 10 Americans have a negative opinion of Mr. Biden.

The survey was conducted before Mr. Trump chose the young politician, Senator JD Vance as his vice presidential candidate. She said that for most Americans, Mr. Vance is still an unknown figure. Six out of 10 respondents do not have enough information to form an opinion about it, while 17 percent have a favorable impression and 22 percent a negative opinion of it.

The survey was conducted with 1,253 respondents in the period between July 11-15, 2024, with a margin of error of 3.8 percent./ VOA
