Former Republican rivals express support for former President Trump

The second day of the Republican National Convention brought into the spotlight some of the former rivals within the party of former President Donald Trump. VOA correspondent Steve Herman covered the Assembly and brings the details from Milwaukee.

The main issue on the second day of the Republican National Convention was "restoring security in America". But, it can also be defined as the night "when the Republicans softened their tones among themselves".

Former rivals of former President Trump in the primary elections of the Republican Party, took the stage conveying messages of unity.

"If you want to secure the border, vote for Trump. If you want the restoration of law and order in the country, vote for Trump," said former Republican candidate for president, Vivek Ramaswamy.

In addition to entrepreneur Ramaswamy, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley also put aside her previous political differences with the former president.

"I'm starting by making one thing perfectly clear - Donald Trump has my strong support," Ms Haley said.

During this year's primaries, Ms. Haley was Mr. Trump's last challenger. The American ambassador to the United Nations during Mr. Trump's administration attacked her former boss, calling him an unfit man who should not be solved.

Delegates from Ms. Haley's home state, such as Gerri McDaniel and Robin Holley, prefer to see money, not the past.

"It doesn't matter who ran against him before. President Trump is bringing everyone together and that's what we want to see," said South Carolina Republican delegate Gerri McDaniel.

"If she is what I think she is, because I don't know her, I will forget the past and she will have the strength to move forward to bring us together and help our country," added delegate Robin Holley.

Other former opponents of Mr. Trump in this year's primaries and from the past also spoke on the floor on Tuesday, including Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Marco Rubio of Florida, former housing secretary Ben Carson and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

"My fellow Republicans, let's get Joe Biden home and Donald Trump back in the White House," Mr. DeSantis said.

Some of the former and future presidential candidates who have shown their support for Mr. Trump may seek his and the delegates' support four years from now, because a Republican victory in the November election would give Mr. Trump his term of office. second and last in the White House.

Today, on the third day of the Republican Assembly, the issues of national security and foreign policy will be in the center./ VOA
