Hezbollah threatens new attacks if Israel targets civilians in Lebanon

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah will strike new Israeli targets if Israel continues to target civilians in Lebanon, the group's leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah warned, noting that there has been an increase in the number of civilians killed in Lebanon in recent days.

Five civilians, all Syrians, including three children, were killed during Israeli strikes in Lebanon on July 16, and at least three Lebanese civilians were killed the day before, according to state media in Lebanon.

Israel has said it targets Hezbollah militants and the group's infrastructure in Lebanon and does not target civilians.

"Continuing the targeting of civilians will push the 'Resistance' to launch rockets at settlements that were not previously targeted," said Nasrallah.

Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed group, is the most powerful military group and the largest political force in Lebanon. This group refers to all populated centers in Israel as settlements, as it does not recognize Israel as a state.

Israel and Hezbollah have traded fire since the Lebanese group announced it would support the Palestinians after Hamas — the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union — attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, sparking the war in Gaza.

The fighting has left more than 100 civilians dead in Lebanon and more than 300 Hezbollah fighters, according to figures compiled by Reuters. Also, as a result of the fighting, the level of damage caused to Lebanese border towns and villages has not been recorded since the Israeli-Lebanese war in 2006.

Nasrallah vowed that all destroyed houses will be rebuilt.

In recent weeks, fears have grown among international observers that Israel may expand its military operation in Lebanon, risking the widening of the war.

Israel has said it is making the necessary preparations for a large-scale operation, but has not yet decided on such an operation. Hezbollah, meanwhile, has said that it does not want a war with Israel, but is ready for such a war./ REL
