Unusual accident/ Vehicle collides with elephant, 3 people lose their lives

At least three people have died after a vehicle collided with an elephant in a national park in Uganda, officials said.

Police said four other people were injured in the incident at Murchison Falls National Park in the country's northwest on Sunday evening.

The vehicle was carrying seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), she added.

Car accidents are common in Uganda and incidents involving wildlife and people are also on the rise, as expanding communities encroach on protected wildlife areas.

The car was travelling from the town of Arua to the capital Kampala when the collision occurred, the Uganda Police Force said in X.

The injured were rushed to a local hospital and later to Kampala for treatment, she said. Officials did not provide information on the elephant's condition.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority urged drivers to be careful of animals crossing the roads.

"Drivers traveling through Protected Areas are strongly advised to drive with caution, as wild animals frequently cross the roads," she said.
