6 European countries withdraw diplomats and close embassies in Iran

Britain, Ireland, Switzerland and several other countries have announced that they have withdrawn their diplomatic staff serving in Iran due to the war with Israel.

"Due to the current security situation, we have taken the precautionary measure of temporarily withdrawing British staff from our embassy in Iran, which continues to operate remotely. We take the protection of our staff and British citizens very seriously and have long advised against all travel to Iran," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Ireland also announced today that it will temporarily relocate its embassy staff from Tehran, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris said.

"Due to the deteriorating situation, after consultation with my officials and in close consultation and coordination with EU partners, I have decided to temporarily relocate our staff from Tehran. Arrangements have been made for the embassy to continue its operations from Dublin," Harris said.

Australia announced today that it has suspended the operations of its embassy in Tehran and ordered diplomatic staff and their families to leave Iran.

Portugal, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and New Zealand also temporarily closed their diplomatic missions in Iran./CNA
