Iran's nuclear program has been severely damaged

Iran's nuclear program, which Iran has always insisted is peaceful, has been severely damaged but not completely destroyed, according to the BBC. Large quantities of highly enriched uranium - a key ingredient for building a nuclear bomb - are believed to be stored hundreds of meters below the Zagros Mountains in a highly guarded site called Fordow.

Most analysts believe this could only be achieved through repeated bombing by the US Air Force, using a weapon called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). But short of regime change in Iran, it would take close visual confirmation on the ground and underground at Fordow to ensure that this suspected component had been destroyed.

This would require either human intelligence backed by well-placed agents from Israel's Mossad spy agency, or a Special Forces raid by commandos. Both are highly risky undertakings.

There is also the risk that Iran has spread materials and machinery to other unknown locations. Moreover, when the dust of this conflict has settled, the Islamic Republic will retain enough scientific knowledge to restart its nuclear activities and then race to build a crude nuclear bomb, believing it to be the best deterrent against future attacks.
