Exports have continued their downward trend for the eighth month in a row, reflecting both a drop in product prices on international exchanges and the consequences that the fall of the euro is having on exporters' incomes.

According to INSTAT, in September 2023, exports of goods reached the value of 34 billion ALL, decreasing by -12.8%, compared to the same period a year ago.

Since March, exports have failed to recover, marking the worst performance since the pandemic period. In January, sales abroad expanded by 20.2% on an annual basis, while in February they expanded by only 2.8%. The decline started in March, with 11.7%, deepened in April with 19.3% and followed the negative trend in May with -11.7%. In June the contraction deepened again to 17.3%, to slow down in July to -4%, jumping in August with -21.9% to continue in September with -12.8%.

The two groups that recorded the biggest contraction in September are "minerals, fuel and energy", with 27.5% and textiles and shoes with 9.5%. All other main groups were also in decline, with the exception of the two groups with the lowest weight such as leather and chemical products. "Food, drinks and tobacco", one of the groups with the best performance, marked the deepest drop of this year, with 13.9%.

According to INSTAT, During the month of September 2023, the reduction of exports by -12.8% was influenced by the following groups: "Minerals, fuels, electricity" with -5.7 percentage points, "Textiles and shoes" with -2.9 percentage points, "Construction materials and metals" with -1.7 percentage points, etc. While positively influenced the groups: "Chemical and plastic products" with +0.1 percentage points and "Leather and articles thereof" with +0.02 percentage points.

The deepening of the decline in September has worsened the performance for the entire 9 months. According to INSTAT, In this nine-month period, exports of goods reached the value of 333 billion ALL, decreasing by -9.0% compared to a year ago, from 8.6%, which was the contraction for the 8th month.

According to INSTAT, the groups that have negatively affected the annual decrease in exports are: "Construction materials and metals" with -7.2 percentage points, "Minerals, fuel, electricity" with -1.5 percentage points, "Textiles and shoes" with -0.9 percentage points, etc. While the groups: "Food, drinks, tobacco" with +1.4 percentage points and "Machinery, equipment and spare parts" with +0.4 percentage points have had a positive impact.

Fashion does not stop the fall

For the fourth month in a row, textile and footwear exports have followed the shrinking trend. In September, this group shrank by 9.5%, while for the whole 9 months the reduction reached 3.5%.

Exports of machinery, equipment, spare parts were until March the group that was recording the best performance of exports as a result of the expansion of factories working in the automotive support industry. However, in April, this group also recorded a decrease in exports by 5.9% on an annual basis. However, in May, the group returned to growth, expanding by 10.5%. but, in June, the group recorded a decrease again, by 4.8%. The contraction continued in July with -3% and deepened in August, to 14.3. The downward trend continued in September, although at a slower rate of -1.3%. According to company representatives, the negative performance is related to the consequences that the devaluation of the euro is having on the activity of factories that produce or assemble spare parts for the automotive industry.

For the 9th month, the group has increased by about 5.6.
