INSTAT figures for unemployment in Albania/Shano: Higher than indicated

Economist Dritan Shano has commented on INSTAT's report on unemployment in Albania, saying that it is untrue that unemployment figures are higher than published.

During an interview in Euronea, Shano said that this is basically not a problem of INSTAT, but because of the informal economy that prevails in our country.

He added that in our country there is a very poorly constructed economy, where agriculture, which should be one of the most important sectors, does not have the capacity to produce enough to survive, but we get everything ready-made from abroad.

 "We have a very badly structured economy, we have an economy where agriculture, which is a primary sector, but which today in Albania occupies 20% of the national production. This is an alarming figure. It is an agriculture that does not meet the needs of the country for survival, because we are net importers of all foods, whether they are fresh or processed.

We have a tourism sector which has received a "boom" these last 2-3 years, but which needs an unqualified workforce, we need waiters and cooks, services that do not require diplomas. Here there is a discrepancy between the offer of work and the demand for work", said Dritan Shano./CNA
