Tax overload

It's hard to feel sorry for someone who brags about the Sony headphones they bought for £460 ($600). It's also hard to worry about the finances of a man who sleeps on a Tempur Elite mattress, bought for £1,700.

It's almost unnatural to feel sympathy for a 30-year-old who posts a photo of his bank account with £100,180.79, accompanied by the caption: "Charlie Munger famously said: 'The first £100,000 is the hardest.'"

"Well, I did it, Charlie."

These examples come from the social media Reddit, where the forum “High Earner, Not Rich Yet” or “Henry” for short has been created. This online forum has gathered Britons with six-figure annual incomes, who simultaneously boast about their wealth and complain about their problems.

"Henry" is the natural home of a British man burdened with taxes and sidelined by politicians. Poor Henry has more problems than you might think.

For starters, the taxes Henry has to pay are painful. Overall, tax collection in Britain is at its highest level since World War II. People on average incomes are not punished as badly by taxes.

Middle-class people are taxed lightly. This is thanks to generous tax-free allowances, cuts to employee national insurance and a basic income tax rate that is at its lowest in the modern era.

But the same cannot be said for Henry. He does not benefit from the income tax exemption, which reaches up to the £100,000 limit.

When you factor in national insurance and student loan repayments, which act as a tax, a typical Henry could face a tax rate of 71%. These are not the levels of the 1960s, when The Beatles lamented “1 for you, 19 for me”, but it’s still a high tax.

Henry is also not entitled to the benefits that others enjoy. The Conservatives introduced generous free childcare benefits, worth tens of thousands of pounds. A typical Henry, however, is excluded from this benefit.

Taking all this into account, a typical “Henry” living in London with two children under the age of five would be better off earning £99,999 than £149,000.

Tax experts often have to explain that tax rates ensure there are no huge losses when incomes exceed a certain threshold. But in England, earning even one pound more than £100,000 a year can cost you thousands of pounds.

No party seems interested in fixing this problem. Henry is ignored by politicians, who think it's not their job to take care of the rich.

This is unlikely to be a short-term problem. What if Henry gets tired of the four-day workweek? He will retire early. Britons can accumulate £60,000 tax-free in their pension each year, to reduce their taxable income and avoid high tax rates.

If wealthy Britons are forced to save heavily in their thirties, they could benefit from a generous pension in their fifties. By 2050, many of today's typical Henrys will have left the workforce and taken early retirement.

 

It's an unfair life, Henry!

If politicians don't mind fighting for Henry, whether for political gain or for the sake of the economy, perhaps they should consider self-interest. Parliamentarians have benefited from a huge pay rise in the last decade.

A member of Parliament will earn around £94,000 starting in April, and that amount is expected to rise to over £100,000 a year. The House of Commons will become a house full of people like Henry. Maybe then politicians will fix this problem./ Monitor.al
