Vacations are no longer just sea and sand. The addition of low-cost airlines and destinations from the airport has significantly expanded the geography of travel anywhere in Europe.

But, if the ticket to go to a destination in Europe can be cheap, you have to do the calculations for the stay and the food you will consume in restaurants.

Eurostat's Price Index indicator by purchasing power for hotels and restaurants gives an idea of ??which countries have the cheapest accommodation and food.

We start with Albania. Although they may have increased recently, especially in the South, our country ranks second in Europe after North Macedonia for the cheapest prices for hotels and restaurants, which are 49.3% of the European average (North Macedonia 47.4%).

This means that if on average in Europe you will spend 100 euros to sleep and for food in a restaurant, in Albania the same choice costs almost 50 euros.

Although the index has increased compared to 4 years ago, when it was 45.6% of the European average, local restaurants attract foreign tourists both for the cheap cost and the rich cuisine.

In some bars in Bllok, or in Kalaja, most of the customers are foreigners. At "Era" there is almost always a queue mainly of foreigners.

After Albania, Kosovo is the cheapest, with 51.1% of the European average, followed by Bulgaria with 51.6% and Turkey (57.3%). In the region, the most expensive are Serbia (67.2%) and Montenegro, where hotels and restaurants cost 62.8% of the European average.

Of the popular destinations, the cheapest is Portugal, with 74.3% of the European average, followed by Spain (83.4%), Greece (85.4%) and Croatia (90.6%). Croatia, which saw an overpopulation of tourists in recent years, is also one of the countries that has become more expensive.

In 2020, hotels and restaurants in Croatia were 80% of the European average.

Italy is slightly more expensive than the European average, at 107%. At similar levels are Germany (100.7), France (113.4)

Take precautions when you go to ….

Switzerland is the most expensive country in Europe for food and accommodation. For 50 euros spent in Albania, you should have 172 euros in Switzerland. The same for Iceland (166% of the European average), or Denmark (1525), Norway (143%) and Finland (129%).

How much do hotels and restaurants cost?

According to other Numbeo data, in Albania a meal for two people in a three-course restaurant costs $49. In Switzerland, this lunch will cost you $127, which is actually the most expensive in the world. In Italy the same meal costs $65. In Greece, there is not much difference from Albania, with lunch reaching 55 euros.

Albania competes with the cheapest accommodation prices. In Tirana, you can find a 4-star luxury hotel or apartment near the center on August 17-18 for 50-80 euros.
