In the system of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which is one of the financiers of the Vorë-Hani i Hoti railway project, it was announced that this week the opening of the tender for the rehabilitation of this line is expected, as the type of procurement includes goods, works and consultancy.

Specifically, Albanian Railways, which is the contracting authority and the direct beneficiary of the funding, estimates that the opening of the procedure is expected on August 1.

"The client mentioned above intends to use part of the proceeds of a loan/grant administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (the Bank) for the cost of the project mentioned above.

The borrower has applied for co-financing from the following sources in the amounts indicated as an estimate: WBIF grants in the amount of approximately 160 million euros, loans from the EBRD in the amount of approximately 100 million euros, loans from the EIB in the amount of approximately 100 million euros.

"The Bank's financing will be used for the rehabilitation of the 120.2 km railway line between Vora and Hani Hoti on the border with Montenegro, the only railway connection between Albania and neighboring countries. The estimated total value of the project is 356 million euros," the announcement states.

According to the announcement, the contracts will be subject to the Bank's procurement policies and rules and are open for participation by firms from any country, unless otherwise specified in the procurement documents. Procurement within this project will be carried out using the EBRD Client E-Procurement Portal (ECEPP).

The project is part of the extension of the Trans-European Main Transport Network TEN-T in the Western Balkans, which will connect Albania to the regional and European railway networks through the pan-European Corridor X.

The Vorë-Hani Hotit railway passes through seven municipalities and crosses the Western Lowlands of Albania, running from South to North. The railway connects the urban centers of Vora, Mamurras, Laç, Milot, Lezha, Shkodra and Koplik.

It crosses the Albania/Montenegro state border at Hani e Hoti (km 140). According to the administrative division, the railway crosses the territories of seven municipalities (Vorë, Krujë, Kurbin, Lezhë, Vau Dejës, Shkodër and Malësi e Madhe).

The existing railway line Vora - Hani i Hotit was built in two stages: from Vora to Laç in the early 1960s, while from Laç to the Albania-Montenegro border, in 1985.

The earthquake of November 29, 2019 interrupted the operation of this line due to the damage to the bridge over the Išem river, but even earlier the speed of passing trains was very low./ Monitor
