The euro falls below the dollar for the first time in 20 years

The euro has fallen below the dollar for the first time in nearly 20 years.

This is after the war in Ukraine pushes the currency to continue falling, reports the BBC.

One euro bought $0.998 on the foreign exchange market, down 0.4% in intraday trading.

Fears that Russia could limit Europe's energy supplies have increased the chances of a recession in the eurozone.

The European Central Bank has lagged behind other central banks in raising rates, further weakening the euro.

Currencies tend to rise when the relevant central bank raises interest rates, as international investors look at a greater return for holding assets priced in that currency.

The dollar has also been strong in recent months, boosted by interest rate hikes by the US central bank and investors seeking the safe haven of dollar assets in times of global turmoil./Euronews
