Despite the difficulties, economies of scale have always brought great benefits to businesses.

Fixed costs are set against more revenue, increasing profits and supporting investment.

Market weight brings greater negotiating power with suppliers and financiers.

By the early 2000s, the advantages of economies of scale became even more pronounced. Intangible assets, including software and intellectual property, gave an advantage to companies that had the financial means to invest in them.

Globalization gave large companies more room to grow, as well as access to larger and cheaper labor pools.

In America, the profit gap between large and small companies widened (see chart 1). Economists began to talk about “superstar” firms that race ahead of the competition.

Now size is giving advantages in new ways. Artificial Intelligence is reinforcing the dominance of large firms over small ones.

So too has the presidency of Donald Trump, which has increased the importance of sustainability and political influence. However, these changes also bring risks for America's corporate giants.

Companies from Apple to Walmart are finding that their size could make them a target of Donald Trump's wrath.

Let's start with Artificial Intelligence. You might think that these leviathans would be too tied to bureaucracy to use the new technology.

In fact, economies of scale allow them to invest much more than smaller rivals.

According to a survey conducted in December by the Bain firm, American companies with more than $5 billion in revenue had an average annual budget of $27 million for Artificial Intelligence projects, five times the level of the previous February.

Those with incomes between $500 and $5 billion had set aside $9 million, increasing by two-thirds over the same time (see chart 2).

JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in America, says it has deployed AI tools to most of its 320,000 employees. UnitedHealth, the largest health insurer, says it has 1,000 different applications for the technology.

Sanjin Bicanic from Bain notes that getting AI to work well is proving more expensive than other types of digital technology, as it requires companies to organize data and interact with models.

Large firms have the added advantage of larger data sets that can be used to improve the Artificial Intelligence systems they build.

It is not just technology, but also politics, that is favoring the largest companies.
