UNESCO requests urgent protection / Ohrid, at risk from illegal constructions

UNESCO, for the third time, warns that the Ohrid region is at risk from illegal constructions, urbanization and inappropriate planning. Urgent actions are required from North Macedonia and Albania to preserve this natural and cultural treasure, so that it is not included in the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The UNESCO reactive mission in the latest report on the Ohrid region again emphasized the urgent need for the authorities in North Macedonia to take concrete and decisive steps to protect the unique natural and cultural assets of Ohrid.

This is the third UNESCO report stating that inappropriate interventions may cause Ohrid to lose its outstanding universal value in the short or medium term.

Faced with serious threats, Ohrid remains under the constant observation of the United Nations body, which once again warned that it is possible for the Ohrid region to be included in the List of World Heritage in Danger.

In the new report, published these days, UNESCO, among other things, calls for the revision of the urban plans for Ohrid and Struga, the urgent ban on construction in the Studençishta Swamp, as well as the solution to the problem of unauthorized constructions that damage the authentic character of the region.

The responsibility for the Ohrid Region does not fall only on North Macedonia. Albania also has obligations, since a part of Lake Ohrid that is in Albanian territory has been under protection since 2019.

Albania, among other things, should review the general plan of Pogradec, prevent urban development on the coast, as well as in the sensitive area of ??Drilon.

By February 1, 2025, both countries are required to submit a joint report on the progress and measures taken to protect the region.

Ohrid, a symbol of rich history and natural beauty, faces a challenge that requires united forces from both countries and determination to preserve its heritage for future generations.

The implementation of the recommendations on the threats to Lake Ohrid and the Galicica National Park is also being examined by the Committee of the Berne Convention./ CNA
