A group of three American economists, including the former head of the US Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, has won the Nobel Prize in Economics, due to research related to banking and financial crises.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, and Philip Dybvig have won the Nobel for their research that "significantly improved the understanding of the role of banks in the economy, particularly during financial crises."

"The laureates' findings have improved our ability to avoid even serious crises, and expensive blowout packages," said Tore Ellingsen, chairman of the Prize Committee for Economic Sciences.

Bernanke currently works at the Brookings Institution in Washington, Diamond is a professor at the University of Chicago, while Dybvig is a professor at Washington University in Missouri.

The economics prize is not one of the first five prizes that were awarded in 1895, when the Nobel Prize was created by the inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel.

The Nobel Prize for Economics has been awarded since 1969.
