Pink October/ Breast cancer cases are increasing in Korça

2024-10-04 11:19:00, Aktualitet CNA

In Korça, the cases of patients affected by breast cancer have increased, which appeared for the first time in the city hospital. About 46 cases have been diagnosed in Korça, compared to last year when there were fewer cases of girls and women affected by this disease. Fortunately, patients diagnosed for the first time have caught the disease at an early stage and this makes it easier to cure the disease. Jusilda Dervishi, oncologist at the city hospital, has shown the current situation facing the mammography service and patients affected by breast cancer.

"We are more or less in the same situation as last year. There are about 46 new cases diagnosed for the first time with breast cancer, which have received treatment near the Korçë Regional Hospital, starting with diagnosis in Korçë, going for biopsy to QSUT and then return for treatment to Korca hospital.

Generally there are in all stages, like the early stages. These days we have had patients who have been diagnosed in the early stages, this is because they have been made aware to do more frequent checks and the more often this breast check is done with echo and mammography, the more the possibility increases that the patient will be diagnosed in an earlier stage."

The medical oncologist informs that breast cancer has also affected young people, as patients at the age of 30 are being treated at the hospital. According to her, the affected age groups range from 45 to 65 years old, but there are also older ones. Women should be aware by doing checks at least 1 time in 6 months because even something small that may seem insignificant in the breast can be diagnosed as a cancer disease.

"Breast cancer already affects young people, we have 30-year-old patients who are being treated for breast cancer. The most affected age groups continue to be 45 to 65 years old. This does not mean that even after the age of 65 there is no breast cancer, breast cancer also affects this age. They are aware because as soon as they touch something suspicious, they do an echo and the necessary consultations. My advice is to do an echo at least once every 6 months because anything that touches the breast, even if it doesn't hurt, must be verified, because breast cancer never hurts."

According to the data, in 970 cycles of chemotherapy that are being performed from January of this year until September, 500 of them belong to patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The Korça hospital has all the appropriate medications for the treatment of patients with this disease, while the doctors' appeal is for women and girls who should not neglect periodic mammography and ultrasound checks, regardless of age./ CNA
