Study: Heat, a "silent killer" in Europe

Global warming has tripled the number of deaths from the heatwave that began hitting Europe in late June.

This finding comes from an initial analysis covering a number of cities, as experts warned of a worsening health crisis in the near future.

Scientists estimate that extreme heat caused 2,300 deaths in 12 major cities as temperatures soared across Europe between June 23 and July 2. They attributed 1,500 of the deaths to climate change, which has raised global temperatures and exacerbated extreme weather events, making them even hotter.

Milan was the hardest-hit city, with 317 of the 499 heatwave deaths attributed to climate change, followed by Paris and Barcelona. London had 273 heatwave deaths, 171 of which researchers attributed to human influence on the climate, according to a report in the Guardian.

Scientists used epidemiological models to estimate heat-related mortality in cities including Paris, London, Madrid and Rome over a 10-day period and compared the death toll to that of a hypothetical world in which humans had not raised global temperatures by burning fossil fuels or destroying nature.

Previous studies have estimated that around 44,000 people die from heat in Europe each year, on average over recent decades. Scientists suggested that the high death toll of 2,300 people from a single heatwave in just 12 cities could make this summer particularly dangerous./CNA
