The European Information System announces about the fires in the forests of
Fires in Albania

The European Information System for Forest Fires, EFFI, announced that in Albania from January 1, 2024 to today, August 15, a total of 29,143 hectares of forests have burned. According to this source, only during the last week, 2390 hectares of forests were burned by fires in Albania.

Since the beginning of the year, the European Union's satellite monitoring system has observed "1159 thermal anomalies in the territory of Albania. 410 thermal anomalies were registered during the last week alone, with an increase compared to the previous week, which speaks of an increase in temperatures with an impact on the situation of fires in forest areas".

Due to the numerous outbreaks of forest fires and the limited capacities for extinguishing them, during the months of July and August, Albania activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism twice.

In July, Albania was supported with a helicopter from Italy, while the day before, two helicopters arrived from Romania at the Kuçova air base to extinguish fires in the forests of Albania.

According to the National Civil Protection Agency, during the last 24 hours, more than 40 fires have been registered throughout the country, marking one of the days with high intensity of forest fires. Currently, 10 fires remain active.

For more than two months, almost in the entire territory of Albania, numerous fire foci have appeared in forest areas. The situation is more problematic in the protected areas, where the fires continue to spread rapidly. Thus, the fires spread in the territory of North Macedonia have also appeared in the interior of the territory of Albania, in the National Park of Prespa, in Mount Dry.

In addition, the fires have also spread in the National Park of the Alps, in Çerem i Tropoja, the National Park in Theth, the one in Lure i Dibra, Mali e Tomori and the archaeological park of Fini?. At the end of last month, fires in forest areas endangered a number of tourist resorts on the coast of Shengjin.

Albania has limited technical and human capacities for the protection of forests from fires and intentional damage. The country has about 1,300 forest workers and experts, about 140 firefighting vehicles, most of them old and unsuitable for fighting fires in forest areas, and no helicopters specialized for fighting fires from the air.

In these conditions, the Albanian government, for two months, has activated the forces and means of the army throughout the country in the operation to extinguish fires in forest areas./ VOA
