Archbishop Joan's confession/ His work in the psychiatric hospital,

Archbishop Joan has shared details from his ministry at the Tirana Psychiatric Hospital.

Invited to Prime Minister Edi Rama's podcast, Archbishop Joan said that what he felt when he first encountered the people hospitalized in that hospital was compassion.

Archbishop Joan emphasized that people working in this sector must be well trained, as those people need care and not be abandoned.

His Beatitude Joani expressed that working with people who have mental health problems requires great care and to be treated with compassion and patience just as God is patient with us.

Archbishop Joan considers his work at the Psychiatric Hospital to be the most difficult and painful experience.

"Even today, those people need care, they cannot be abandoned. Maintaining the human family requires solidarity," said Archbishop Joan.

"What I felt the first time was compassion for these people. Especially since I had someone there who we had grown up with. This pushed me even more to stay. I thought that... not that I would cure them but I would try to make them feel a little better."

The mind is the most important thing. That's why they say, "God save our minds."

These people need to be helped. The people who work there should be trained because sometimes they come back to you.  

It takes continuous training for those people, not everyone can afford that service there.

When I was there myself, I was against the harsh treatments. I told the doctors that they could calm down without that. They need compassion there, to love them.

They often remember the way they behaved, their soul and mind are shaken. You have to love them. It requires great patience, just as God is with us.

"It was a painful experience for me. Even today, those people need care, they cannot be abandoned. Maintaining the human family requires solidarity," said Archbishop Joan./ CNA
