Anti-government protests/What the State Department Report on Albania says

The US State Department's OSAC report on Albania has dedicated a special update to the situation in the country following the protests.

According to the report, the protests are generally peaceful, but have resulted in violence in the past.

"Demonstrations vary in size from a few hundred to several thousand participants and often disrupt traffic. One of the most frequent sites of protest activity in the country is the capital's main boulevard, Dëshmorët e Kombit, which is home to many government, diplomatic, and cultural buildings. Molotov cocktails are common during demonstrations, although they are generally thrown at buildings rather than people," the US report said.

Regarding the civic protests against the government, which began on May 31, 2026 in Tirana, the report writes that the major protests targeted a luxury tourist project on the island of Sazan.

"The rallies began as local environmental demonstrations, but when police dispersed these rallies, thousands of Albanians took to the streets in major cities. The protests grew to include calls against government corruption, and some of them turned violent," the report states. /CNA
