The UN warns of the dangers of using smartphones in schools

The United Nations has warned of the dangers of using smartphones in schools, saying "only technology that supports learning" deserves to be used in schools.

Mobile devices can cause distraction, compromise students' privacy and lead to cyberbullying, says Unesco, the UN's education, science and culture agency.

But fewer than one in four countries have laws or policies banning phones in schools, the report said.

In the UK, head teachers make the rules, but restrictions apply in most schools.

Manos Antoninis, author of the Global Education Monitor 2023 report, told the BBC that their study found "examples of smartphone use in school that are distracting students from learning and increasing risks to their privacy at the same time time".

Students shouldn't be completely shielded from technology, Mr. Antoninis said, but states should provide better guidance on what kind of technology should be allowed in school.

Several studies have shown that banning cell phones from schools improves academic performance, according to the report.

Distraction and disruption

In 2021, the then education secretary, Gavin Williamson, called for a ban on mobile phones in schools in England, but current Department for Education (DfE) guidance says it is up to headteachers to decide whether phones cell phones can be used during the school day.

However, it warns that allowing access to mobile phones in school poses risks, including distraction, disruption, harassment and abuse, and can be detrimental to learning.

But others disputed that mobile phones were useful for contacting parents, saying the ban on home use was excessive.

France also has a ban, but makes exceptions for certain groups of students, for example those with disabilities, or when smartphones are used for teaching.

Next year, the Netherlands will largely ban cell phones, tablets and smart watches in high school classrooms./ CNA
