WHO: Fire situation in Europe, a health emergency

The World Health Organization has declared the situation created by the fires in Europe a public health emergency.

Experts say that climate change, which is leading to warmer temperatures and drier conditions, as well as the increasing urbanization of rural areas, means that the fire season is starting earlier and ending later.

They emphasize that fire events are becoming increasingly extreme in terms of burned area, duration and intensity, putting the lives and health of citizens at risk.

Global health experts say that forest fires are devastating to the environment and our health. The smoke they emit can irritate the eyes and lungs, make breathing difficult, worsen asthma and, in the worst case, cause premature death.

Ash from wildfires is a threat to public health because it is a mixture of dangerous air pollutants, such as PM2.5, NO2, ozone, aromatic hydrocarbons, or lead. In addition to polluting the air with these toxic substances, wildfires also affect the climate by releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

At the same time, fires can lead to the paralysis of life with disruptions to transportation, water supply, and electricity services.

In the face of this growing crisis, WHO calls for urgent action by governments, communities and individuals to reduce risks and protect public health.
