WHO aims for global agreement to fight pandemics

The World Health Organization has said that in February of next year it will start negotiations for a global agreement aimed at better fighting pandemics.

The 194-member organization has said that such an agreement is necessary to ensure that the global crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic is never repeated.

In the negotiations held this week, it was said that the states have agreed "to develop the first draft of the agreement, which aims to protect the world from pandemics in the future".

This announcement comes a few days before the third anniversary of the outbreak of the coronavirus in China.

A few weeks later, the virus has begun to spread throughout the world, causing the worst pandemic in a century.

As a result of this virus, 6.6 million people have died, while the global crisis has cost economies trillions of dollars.

The impact of the pandemic on "people's lives, in the economy and in society, should never be forgotten", WHO said.

Plans to approve the text of the agreement are expected to be finalized by spring 2024.

The new coronavirus - which causes the disease COVID-19 - was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China.

The World Health Organization declared the coronavirus as a pandemic on March 11, 2020.

The United States has recorded the highest number of victims, followed by India and Brazil./REL
