Changes to the Criminal Code/ Lamallari: The government, like never before, is

Minister of Justice Besfort Lamallari stated in Parliament that the proposed changes to the Criminal Code represent a commitment of the Albanian state to protecting freedom of expression and strengthening democracy.

During his speech, Lamallari emphasized that for the first time, the Albanian government is taking a serious initiative that protects the work of journalists, freeing them from the pressure of criminal proceedings for defamation.

According to Lamallari, the legal changes provide for the decriminalization of defamation for journalists, as well as additional guarantees for their specific protection in the exercise of their profession.

He described this step as a new standard for the relationship between the state and the media, underlining that these measures aim to strengthen the climate of freedom of speech and information in Albania.

"The Albanian government has made a commitment that has never happened before, for the first time the Albanian state is taking a serious initiative in defense of freedom of expression and a more democratic country that represents the work of journalists without subjecting them to the pressure of criminal prosecution."

"There can be no criminal prosecution for them. We are not satisfied here. In addition to the decriminalization of defamation for journalists, we guarantee specific protection for them," Lamallari said./ CNA
