To drive a water motor or a boat, you need a special license. It is renewed every 5 years after a theoretical and practical driving test.

The head of the Maritime Directorate, the institution that registers watercraft and issues patents for their management, confirms to Euronews Albania that there have been abuses with their issuance.

"We have 7,700 patents and over 8,000 engines. We have had massive removals of patents because they were given in an abusive manner and under age", said Paulin Ndreu.

Persons with a criminal record cannot legally obtain a driving license. The course takes place in private companies similar to driving schools, but the licenses are issued by the Maritime Directorate.

"Every week, about 40-60 people come to us to give them a driving license and about 50% remain in the theoretical and practical testing", he emphasized.

Permits for the beach station are issued by the municipality and the Environment Agency, with confirmation from the port captains that the sea routes are not blocked there.

"We have not given a conformation for that area and there is no technically approved area on the beach of Potami", underlined Ndreu.
