Minister of Defense, Pirro Vengu, has presented to the parliamentary committee for Europe and Foreign Affairs the draft law “On the import, export and transit of firearms, their main components and ammunition”. Vengu stated that this draft law is needed to modernize state control over international transfers of firearms.

"The draft law "On the import, export and transit of firearms, their main components and ammunition" comes as a response to a real need to modernize state control over international transfers of firearms ," ??said Vengu.

The Minister stated, among other things, that six contracts have been signed between the state-owned company "KAYO" and 6 private operators. These contracts, according to him, provide for the production of ammunition, the production of personal tools and equipment, uniforms, light weapons, drones, anti-drone systems and Civil Emergency vehicles. Vengu said that the production of the first "Made in Albania" products is expected to begin this year.

"Regarding the military industry. We have 6 contracts currently signed for the creation of 6 state-private companies through the state-owned company KAYO and 6 private operators. The six contracts foresee the production of ammunition, the production of personal tools and equipment, uniforms, light weapons, drones, anti-drone systems and Civil emergency vehicles. We are also concluding negotiations with "Fincantieri" for the reconstruction of the Pashalimani shipyard, to be able to produce and maintain vehicles not only for our countries but also for allied countries. We expect the first "Made in Albania" products for the three sub-products I mentioned, tactical vehicles, emergency vehicles, uniforms and ammunition, the first production to start this year", the minister said.

He further added that the Ministry of Defense is taking the final steps for the strategic review of Defense 2026.

"The Ministry of Defense is taking the final steps for the strategic review of Defense 2026. It is an important document that stems from several obligations, be it from the last Hague summit. A good part of the allied countries are reviewing their strategies and this definitely forced Albania to take similar measures ," the minister said. /CNA
