The European Commission has reacted regarding the agreement signed yesterday between Albania and Italy for the establishment of 2 centers in Albania where immigrants from Africa will be accommodated in order to examine their requests for asylum.

According to the Italian media, a spokeswoman for the European Commission has stated that the EU is in contact with the Italian authorities to obtain details on the agreement.

"We are in contact with the Italian authorities, we have asked to receive details about the migration agreement with Albania. Before commenting further, we need to understand what exactly they intend to do. We were informed about the Italy-Albania agreement before the announcement" - said an EC spokeswoman.

While the prime minister of Italy Girogia Meloni said that the agreement that was signed yesterday with Albania can become a model of cooperation between member and non-member countries of the EU for the management of migratory flows.

"The agreement with Albania for immigrants announced yesterday can become "a model of cooperation between EU countries and non-EU countries for the management of migratory flows", Prime Minister Giorgia Melon said today in an interview for Il Messaggero. It is an agreement that strengthens the strategic partnership between Italy and Albania and basically has three objectives: to fight human trafficking, to prevent irregular migratory flows and to welcome in Europe only those who really have the right to international protection", adds Meloni./ CNA
